Career Aspirations: "Currently, I am a Laboratory Assistant at the University of Memphis and a Nursing Assistant at Methodist Hospital. I aspire to become an oncologist, cancer researcher, and stem cell researcher."

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “After the passing of my parents, I was faced with significant financial hardship. I work full-time to afford the costs of utilities, insurance payments, and other monthly expenses. As an aspiring medical student, this is far from ideal. Because my free time is limited, I am frequently rushing to study and complete assignments, hindering my academic performance. I applied to the Healy Foundation scholarship in hopes of receiving financial assistance and living more comfortably.

When I was seven years old, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My earliest memories include countless visits to hospitals, where my mother underwent multiple procedures to treat her illness. Despite the treatments, my mother lost her battle with cancer in 2012, leaving my father to care for me. During my junior year of high school, my father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and dementia. When I was not at school, much of my time was spent caring for my father. As his cognitive ability declined, I became responsible for his medical and financial affairs until he passed away in 2021. Since my father’s passing, I have been living by myself. Although it has been very difficult, this experience has pushed me to new extremes and has taught me many valuable lessons.

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “The covid 19 pandemic brought about unexpected hardships for my single-income household: my dad - the sole breadwinner of our household - has taken on the financial responsibility for not only his wife and three children, but his unemployed sister. As a child of older parents, I recognize that my parents are approaching the ages where there may need to be significant savings in case of medical emergencies. Being a twin and a first-generation college student, my only wish is to be able to graduate from college without financially burdening my family. Fortunately, the Healy Foundation has provided me with the necessary personal and financial support to continue my education, allowing me to focus more on the most important aspect of school: learning."

My grandmother has survived Breast Cancer twice and besides my mother she is the strongest person I know. Last year, my mother was diagnosed and I have had to step up my responsibilities to help the family.

After promising my mother that I would not leave school and come home, I committed myself to working rigorously at a very competitive academic program. I am encouraged by her strong will to live and desire to see my sister and I walk on graduation day.”

The Healy Foundation is a wonderful group that allows students like myself the opportunity to continue pursuing a college degree even when life throws a curve ball at you.”

Career Aspirations: "I want to devote my life in aiding others to reclaim their voices through the policy parameters of education and reproductive health. My time at UC Berkeley has given me the space to grow and coalesce both my policy passions, through my bilateral pedagogical studies of Social Welfare and Education. My Education minor in particular has taught me that education can be utilized as an apparatus of self-emancipation and collective unity. Ultimately, I want to aid my greater community by demystifying the concept of thriving by creating embracing and equitable pathway programs for disenfranchised youth— most notable the immigrant community. I plan on actuating this dream by getting an M.A in public policy and a JD in critical race studies, in order to become a human rights attorney with centralism in reproductive rights. After receiving my J.D I want to create a non-profit where immigrant populations can both receive legal aid and gain professional mentorship.”

I have made so many sacrifices, spent long hours both in the library and at different jobs so that it can be possible to be the sole provider for my higher education. What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “In January, my mom died of cancer after a 6-month battle with Stage IV cancer. It has been the most challenging few months of my entire life. Also, I have always struggled with paying for school because my parents never made much money, so a lot of the burden has been put on me. My girlfriend at the time (fiancé now) told me about the opportunity after my mom passed away. She thought it would be a perfect scholarship to apply to. When I applied, I honestly did not think I would get it, but I genuinely believe it is a gift from God. He is to get all of the glory. I am so appreciative of the Healy Foundation that now I can have some financial peace through these challenging times.

Friends and family have been so critical in helping the grief but knowing that because my mom was a Christ follower, she is now celebrating with Jesus in Heaven. That brings me a lot of hope and peace. Financially, this scholarship has helped me pay for school, and it honestly couldn't have come at a better time. I cannot thank you guys enough for your contribution to my schooling."

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “Throughout the years, I have gone through many financial hardships. Because of this, I would apply to scholarships but most of them would only focus on academic and career goals. As I came across the Healy Foundation scholarship, I was overjoyed to discover a platform that was willing to understand my unique challenges that I have had to face throughout my life.

When I was younger, my father and mother’s business went bankrupt. Due to this circumstance, my siblings and I had to pick up three jobs to help put food on the table. Unfortunately, our financial situation never improved and I was told from a very young age that my college tuition would be in my own hands. Since then, I have remained top of my class, I am a full time employee and student, and I have started my own campus club focused on CleanTech startups. Throughout all of these obstacles, I have quickly adapted to the changes in my environment and have solidified the belief that every challenge provides a stepping stone toward a better version of myself."

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: "During my junior year in college and amid the global pandemic, my father who will always be my superhero and biggest inspiration passed away due to COVID-19. At this lowest point in my life, I found solace in remembering my father’s core values that he instilled in my brother and me throughout our upbringing. He had always told us that we should view adversities in life as opportunities, lessons to become better and stronger people. And, so when I was grieving alongside my family and attempting to make sense of the cascade of uncertainty shoved into my hands, his voice of reason and inspiration provided me with clarity and strength. In addition of financial stress, I had to continue to excel in academics, extracurriculars, recruiting, networking, and taking care of my family. This scholarship has alleviated some of the financial burden that comes with being a first-generation low-income student allowing me to focus on finishing my classes and hopefully start studying for the GMAT."

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “Finding organizations that are willing to invest into future leaders inspires me in great ways. Growing up, I had to learn the hard way that even though knowledge is priceless, there is a high price to achieve it. Being academically successful demands time, patience, tenacity and money. Coming from two parents that moved to America with no friends, resources or even knowledge of the common language, I have been taught to be grateful for every opportunity that has come my way. My parents came because they saw a great future for their children on this land. By awarding me this gift, you solidify their vision and help them see it by helping me.”

Career Aspirations: "Open my own event planning company with a focus on helping those in need."

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: "My family has been facing crushing debt since April 11, 2017. That was the day my older brother was hit by a car while riding his bicycle home from baseball practice. A college-recruited athlete, he was a month away from graduating from high school and now had a 50% chance of surviving the initial traumatic brain injury surgery. He ultimately had four operations. He was in intensive care and then an acute rehabilitation center for more than a month. He went through years of extensive physical, speech and occupational rehab, much of which was not covered by insurance. However, our entire family believes it was essential to the amazing progress my brother has made. The upside is that his recovery has been so miraculous due to this additional treatment that his neurosurgeons from Johns Hopkins have invited him to speak at Harvard Medical School and other neurology conferences. The downside is that the additional treatment cost the majority of the equity in our home and what my parents saved for our college educations and their retirement. Sadly, since he could no longer play baseball, my brother lost his scholarship. He also had to change his major from architecture because the math was too difficult. He left his original college and joined me at Drexel where we lived together and I helped him as needed until his graduation in June of 2023. I spent much of my high school and college years writing scholarship essays in order to fund my education. Although I have been working in hospitality jobs since I was 14, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, it will be scholarships such as this one that will allow me to complete my education without a huge burden of debt at the end."

Having grown up in a community that faces several challenges, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and the difference it can make in people's lives. The Healy Foundation's emphasis on empowering students to become leaders and change-makers aligns perfectly with my own aspirations. This scholarship would provide me with the resources and support to further my education and contribute meaningfully to addressing the issues that matter most to me.

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: "While I have been in a time of need, I came across the Healy Foundation Scholarship and I was moved by their mission and goal, and I believed that their ideals aligned with my own situation.

My family has taken on many challenges at once in a short period of time. I had a bad accident and lost my car; my brother who was the main source of income for our household fell into a deep depression and lost his job; we were forced to unexpectedly move out of our home with nowhere to go. I have had to push through a very busy semester, full-time internship, and research project, all while recovering from the accident and the financial strain my family and I have been put in. I continue to persist towards my aspirations in the hopes to put me and my family in a more stable situation."

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “This year, I had to adapt to a new environment and a new life without my father, which challenged me both as a student and as an individual, forcing me to transition quickly. After my father’s passing at the start of the pandemic, having to fulfill my responsibilities while grieving posed a significant internal struggle for me. My mother had a part-time job as a security guard, and I worked day and night, which still was not enough to cover essential expenses. The Healy foundation scholarship was the answer to my prayers. With so much uncertainty about continuing my education because of my finances, the Healy foundation gave me a sense of relief that I can continue pursuing my degree in Global Studies in hopes to create a non-profit organization in Africa. Thanks to the Healy foundation, they have secured my ability to serve everyone around me.”

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “Throughout the 4 years that I have had Crohn’s Disease, I have tried numerous successful and unsuccessful ways to treat the disease; everything from medications to supplements to diet and back to medications. While only some of these efforts have been victorious, all of them left me with a long list of receipts, many of which are not covered by insurance. The Healy Foundation and its profound contribution to supporting those who have become resilient in the face of financial hardships have significantly helped me overcome these difficulties. Their support allowed me to continue taking a, costly, life-changing medication, while also being able to afford my education as an out-of-state student.”

I want to honor my late brother who had cerebral palsy and hope to one day be able to provide the necessary aid and ensure the best therapy possible to my future patients along with the motivation to continue striving despite their physical incapacities.”

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: "I came into college as a first-gen and low-income student with no experience on how to manage the “adult world” let alone financial responsibilities. My father was the sole bread-winner but unfortunately became permanently disabled in 2011, so coming into college, I had no other choice than to take on my financial responsibilities because we were not in the position to bring another financial burden on my father. Fast forward December 2019, my father had two clogged arteries which resulted in a heart attack and permanent stents to support his cardiac health. After my father’s heart attack, we had to put even more money aside to provide for his cardiac rehabilitation therapy along with the countless medications he has to take every day. I made a promise to my parents that I would do anything I could to help their financial struggles and because of the Healy Foundation, myself and my family can continue caring for my father and his health necessities. I am fortunate enough to receive support from the Healy Foundation to continue my education, despite the hardships I have experienced in the past few years. This scholarship has not only provided support to my financial burdens, but has also motivated me to continue my education post-undergrad and strive for a higher education.”

Career Aspirations: “I aspire to become a Physician and one day have my own practice.”

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: "Two years ago, my mother quit her job to become a full time, stay at home mom. My parents are separated so she is a single mother. She made the decision to do this so she could take care of my two younger autistic brothers and one younger sister. I have been dealing with the school expenses all on my own through my job, financial aid, and scholarships for the past two years due to my family situation. I am the first one in my family to attend college. I am fully committed to putting no less than 100% in my schoolwork so I can not only make my family proud but myself as well. I want to make a difference in this world, and I’m more than determined to make that come true. I want to prove that no matter what your background is, you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it.”

What Inspired You to Apply to The Healy Foundation?: “I was inspired to apply to the Healy Foundation as their mission to help others so closely relates to my personal goal of giving back to the community.

One of my greatest achievements to date is co-founding ‘Misty's Mission', a non-profit organization that donates canned food for pets to local food pantries in the neighborhood to care for animals in need, with my sister. We have since expanded on this idea by both starting food recovery programs on campus that deliver to students in need of assistance.

The Healy Foundation has provided me the financial resources to finish my collegiate career at a point when I didn't know whether I would have the means to stay in school. In addition to the financial support it's truly meaningful to be involved in an organization that demonstrates the same ideals I look to embody and I look forward to staying involved with the Foundation during life after graduation.”
